In a world full of chaos, in either having no time or wishing for time to pass quicker, the most important things can be lost to memory. My work focuses on utilizing abstract expressionism combined with realism and collage elements to express the passing of time in the context of the human mind.
My path through painting began with mastering a unique style of abstract expressionism. I take influence from graffiti marks and utilize bright contrasting colors to convey my feelings when painting the piece. With every layer reflecting a different day of thoughts and the emotions that ensue, each finished painting is a reflection of a different period in my life. Experiences layer on each other, allowing me to grow as a person and articulate my reaction in an artistic way. Just like me, my art grows and changes due to layers of time and experiences, with my journey being reflected straight onto the canvas.
Since my paintings’ non-objective elements are largely meant to be up to interpretation from the viewer, I utilize realistic painting to give meaning to each piece and add to its impact. Though the realism I paint may appear random, each object is carefully composed to reflect a specific memory or association with time. The objects interact with each other and blend with the abstraction to express the sometimes blurry recollections of my memories. I also tend to focus my pieces on periods when I observe a difference in the passing of time: when time speeds or slows down, I attempt to find the reason and express it in a painting. Memories do not follow the rules of time, and time does not respect the recollection of memories, despite the generalization by many that time and memories are directly parallel. My art works to exploit the differences in the two and expose their disconnect and nonsensical natures.
