CycleSecure

Freshman year capstone project: enhanced bike safety equipment for city cycling.

“Bicyclist injuries remain consistently, disproportionately high. Over the last 5 years, estimated injury-only crashes averaged about 45,400 yearly.” —NHTSA: National Highway Traffic Safety Association, 2021

About

The Problems:

  • City infrastructure built around cars

  • Driver negligence

  • Poor visibility on bikes

  • Cyclists not being seen by cars

  • Inconvenient and inaccessible bike safety equipment

  • Bikers FEAR doing what they love

Outreach:

  • Bikers (commuters, recreational)

    • Ben and Alan Farmer, Ed Nolan, Mark Hofmeister

  • Bike Shops/Clubs

    • Brady Rizzardi (Pitt Cycling Club), Eric Boerer (BikePGH), Ian (BikeTek)

  • Other Users

    • Armin Samii (dashcam.bike), Alison, Treaster (velo.ai), Lt. Brooke Riley (Pitt Police)

Our Solution:

  • VISIBILITY

    • Seeing and being seen is the most important part of bike safety

    • Mirror attachment with two turn signals, extended out from the normal width of the bike for higher visibility and easily accessible buttons for simple signaling

  • ACCESSIBILTY

    • Age, ability, and adaptability pose significant issues for users current safety products

    • rearview mirror is adaptable to different bike types and reduces need for user to have to physically turn

Who It Helps:

According to our interviewees and research:

  • Bikers→ seeing cars, minimizing risks for commuters, making access & use of safety equipment easy

  • Drivers→more likely to see bikers, draws focus to the road, helps minimize crash risk with bikers

  • The environment→encourages eco-friendly transport

And the most important thing: it helps people get back to doing what they love without fear
