To increase my awareness of the process of becoming an artist, I am taking a look at Mary Scurlock, a local Richmond artist whose work I absolutely love.
Mary currently teaches at the Center for the Arts and International Baccalaureate programs in Henrico County's Schools. She went to VCU and was educated in Art Education, Painting, and printmaking. Later, she began teaching. Mary first taught the summer program at Saint Catherine's school in 1994-95. She then moved on to teaching drawing and painting at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, or VMFA. Following that she began to teach at Henrico Schools and has won various awards for the quality and dedication to her art education.
With her paintings winning various awards, being exhibited at places like the Federal Reserve and Capital One, and her solo shows in Richmond and New York, she is an incredibly successful artist who has roots right next to my own high school. She was also able to attend an artist and writers' residency in Southern France, which I think would be an amazing opportunity to have and inspires me to apply for similar programs in the future. Mary is certainly an exemplary artist who has found her impact on the world.

I love the layering in this piece as well as the colors. I am drawn to this piece in particular because of its name. It is curious that there is supposed to be a full village represented in the painting when it is largely blocked off with white.
