Jeff Koons is an American artist known for his work that delves into pop culture. He was born in 1955 in Pennsylvania. He went to college at the Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore. He now lives and works in NYC.
Koons is best known for his monumental sculptures like Rabbit, Balloon Dog, and his large floral sculpture, Puppy. I find these works really interesting because of their bright colors and his clever use of popular symbols/motifs and unique integration of those into the pieces. I also love how most of his pieces are extremely large in scale.
I am currently really interested in integrating reflection into my work (with things like bubbles, mirrors, balloons, etc) and I especially love how Koons made his Balloon Rabbit sculpture. I love the bright colors paired with the reflective material. He achieves this look by using stainless steel and having it polished until it is extremely reflective. Then, to give it color, he paints transparent colored paints on top, giving it the look of a balloon.
